From time to time, I have the pleasure of being involved in application design, from audience facing syndication administration to in-house production systems.

I've always had a close involvement with everything related to Audio and Video on the BBC News Website.  Looking at the Web section of this portfolio, you will notice I've designed every aspect of the site's AV offerings since they began.

The AVDB came at a time when the BBC had to think about emerging platforms and the wide adoption of flash video technology.  Its a system that handles the ingest of AV from raw broadcast streams, catalogues them and enables their inclusion on different mediums by transcoding in to multiple formats for mobiles, interactive television and public spaces etc.

There was a workflow need for this too as the department had built up progressively incongruous ways of working on a growing number of required platforms.  I was tasked to interview all the staff in the AV area, and then streamline their tasks in to the design of the application using informed personas, enabling quicker production and ultimately more material for a stronger service.

This was a side project, produced in spare time to take advantage of the release of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.  You can choose which sections and how many stories you wish to be updated on, and have the ability to toggle an audio alert for breaking news.

The Economist Screensaver - The Multi-Media Corporation.

Developed in early 1997, this adorned the desktops of many professionals.  The globe would spin at considered intervals, stopping and zooming in on a variety of the world's major countries, displaying economic data derived from the CIA's World Fact Book.
